Roadkill
Singapore, 2022
The Roadkill series was made in response to bike-riding expeditions in Singapore. My aim was to record the sensation of moving over the road surface - looking forward, looking down. Whilst photographing the road (with my phone attached to the handlebars) I noticed how the camera struggled to focus. The photographs had a gritty, noisy blur. I devoted considerable time experimenting with print techniques to explore this. It’s remarkable how much stuff is left lying beside the road – bits of metal, plastic and most notably, workmen’s gloves. Back in the studio I started drawing these abandoned, fragile forms.
